Single Camera

Single Camera and Multi- Camera
Single camera production uses a single camera for all of the visual shots. The advantages of having using a single camera because it is low budget as you will only need one camera, one camera man and one grip. It films real life events to make it seem realistic for the audience. When filming using multi- camera’s they will be multiple camera men that will get in the way of the shot which will then mean they will have to reset and do it again so that no one gets caught in the shot, so that the audience will not be distracted from the film but when using a single camera you will not catch anyone else in the shot so that will mean that they would not have to keep resetting the scene. You are able to get the correct lighting for the shot such as high key lighting which reduces the amount of contrast because of the very strong lighting. This creates a sense of happiness. It is much easier to scout for locations as you have much more time to plan. It will be a smaller crew so the set up time will be much shorter than the filming should be much longer. This enables the crew to be much more creative. A disadvantage is that it is much more time consuming but it will enable the directors to have much more control over each of the shots. A lot of editing is involved as scenes are normally filmed all together so if there is a dialogue scene all the lines of one person will be shot together and the same for the other person, which you would then have to edit the scenes together so that it looks as if they were having a normal conversation. Single camera productions can easily be linear as well as non-linear as the scenes are normally filmed in sections rather than flowing which are what multi- camera productions do.
Multi- camera production is set up o several cameras and at the same time they record or broadcast a scene. There are six main genres in which multi camera production of TV programming such as sports, concerts, public events, game shows, chat shows and magazine shows. The advantages of using multiple cameras are that there is more than one view of angle of footage that you can edit together you have a wide range of footage to choose from. Also another advantage is that it is good to replay in slow motion with live sports from different angles. Multi -camera productions are normally live such as Jeremy Kyle you get different angles this can also be made realistic so that we are able to see all of the reactions from the presenter, interviewee’s and the audience. The shots are all filmed at once so that means there will be nothing out of place or nothing will be changed. The disadvantages of using multi cameras is when you film in a certain location you would have to carry a lot of equipment and it will take longer to set up. Single Camera productions are used much more in the media in today as it is much more effective and cheaper for the directors and they tend to make it cheaper for them to film and they tend to make productions more realistic like E4 skins.

Formats
Singles tell a story over the duration of the film which can be up to 90 minutes long or even longer. Such as if i stay. A series is a television show/ television program intended for broadcast on television that tells a story within a period of time. It creates continuing characters and uses them to tell different stories each week. It is short normally 20- 40 minutes running time. A serial runs over a long period of time. This can be a TV series such as breaking bad as it is based on one character

Narrative Structure:
Linear (3 act structure) Linear will go in a straight line it is normally in chronological order. In up the movie it is used to tell a story of his life with his wife in the order how life should go the audience understand the life story of a character(s)so the audience are not left guessing what is going on.
Episodic narrative is a story that is told through episodes or segments. A soap opera on television. Such as the walking dead it is told in many series all highlighting one topic that there is a fight for survival against the dead. Each episode generally ends on a cliff hanger. This leaves the audience in suspense making them want the next episode to come quicker.
Open narratives usually have many characters and no foreseeable ending. Hollyoaks and Eastenders are usually multi- stranded and in chronological order or real time. The audience get to continuously watch programs without and ending but can consist of different story lines.
Closed Narratives are complete stories with a likely end in mind. Depth set up with interior voiceovers giving characters thoughts, hallucinations such as fifth club. So that we are not left on a cliff hanger and so that the audience knows that it is the ending.
Realist is when they try and aim to present the viewer with a real life feel. Skins shot realistic scenes of what would actually happen in real life. They do this so that the viewers get a real life feel so that it feels believable.
Anti- realist presents the viewer with a situation or concept that is clearly made up or unreal such as transformers this is made up. This is not realistic these events do not happen usually offers the viewers humor or escapism from the real world. Anti- realist is also known as formalist narratives.
Multi-stranded narratives are many different works that are made up of several different strands. The film love actually is multi stranded as it is 8 different stories and they are all linked at the end. This is used as more than one person story is told and they are all inter connected.
