Prep Work

Displaying file.jpegShanelle Marie .She has done many cover videos and has written her own songs which she has performed live at hard rock cafe. She has established her image as she is a pop.

The song is called "Love is one thing you can get". This is a very heart felt song which is about how she will picture life with out the person that she loves.

I feel that this music video should not just be based on on couples relationship between man and women but also relationships between mother and son another relationship that I will like to have is relationship between people that are less fortunate than other people. This video will reinforce the word love.

Task One

https://www.wetransfer.com/downloads/3587e09b7b99712e32ca82c2837d306520161031173950/e5ff8ad8020a9ced057cf46b268e39e120161031173950/eafdd3

Vocals- A female will be singing the vocals, Shanelle's voice will be the only voice on the track which then means that she will be the center of attention however if she felt that she had wanted to take a much more artistic route then she will not be shown and in replacement of her a actress.

Instrument- The instruments where very gentle  due to the fact that this song is based on love, this will then mean that the instruments are gentle. Throughout the track the instruments stop this is so that the lyrics are re enforced as this is a crucial bit and people tend not to listen to the lyrics anymore and pay more attention to the visuals.

Drums- There is a drum kit used throughout the whole track as when the hi- hat is played this could represent her or a heart beat.

Task Two

Location- The location of this music video will be set in an empty house to represent the hole that she feels when the person that she loves is not around.

Characters and Costume - The will be more than one character of all ages who will all be of  different ages. This is to show the diversity of love and how no matter what age you are someone will still love you. The costumes will be average clothes that people wear on a day to day live. These people will be wearing white to represent innocence and some will be wearing red which can represent love other people will be wearing black as they are trying to take love away from people.

Colour and Lighting- There will be high key lighting due to the fact that there

Editing Pace- The editing pace will be quiet slow and the song is quite slow.

Camera movements/ angles- There will be some low to show some people feeling weak without having enough love. The will be canted angles used as some people will be unstable.

Task Three-

Assessment 3c: How to Beat edit

In this report I will be discussing how to beat edit this will be a step by step on how you have to edit a music video. Beat editing is key when it comes down to music videos due to the fact that people are only interested in the visuals, also due to the fact that the music could be fast paced and this will also be reflected in the visuals so editing it faster will mean that a younger generation will pay attention to this. I will be comparing and evaluating both pieces of my my work, my summer and class work.

Beat editing

Beat editing is a key when it comes to editing music videos. The reason that this is useful is because people only pay attention to the visuals hence forth beat editing so that the audience becomes interested in the music video, you could also say that beat editing re enforces the track to due the fact that it cuts to the beat.  When beat editing you tend to cut to different camera shots/ angles this is so that we are not viewing one long camera shot and also so that people will not be bored of what they are watching.

Before you start editing you must make sure that you mark all of the points where the beats are to ensure that you get all of the beats. When finished with that you then have to start cutting the points where you have marked. You can add different shots so that you will not be looking at one long shot as this will be boring.

Beat editing differs depending on different genres this is as they all take a different approach when i comes to beat editing due to the fact that they have a different aim. In this hip- hop video 'club cant handle me' they use as the target audience that they are aiming this at is much more younger generation  with short attention spams so by doing this they will be able to get much more views.

However in rock music videos the fast pace editing is used as this is what will be seen in a live concert due to the fact that they are much more unstable when they are performing live onstage this is reflected in the way that they are portrayed in music videos as the editing is quicker.

Lip Syncing

Lip syncing was used in this music video. This is commonly used in the music videos out today due to the fact that this is to promote the artist. Lip syncing is a convention that is used frequently especially in hip hop or pop music videos this is to re enforce the lyrics due to the fact that people tend not to listen to the song they prefer the visuals.

The first video that I will be evaluating will be my summer music video. One of the techniques that are used is match on action. Match on action is an editing technique that re enforces continuity. This is when one shot cuts to another so that you are not looking at the same one shot. The reason that match on action is used in my music videos is so that people do not become bored of what they are watching and so that they will be intrigued to carry on watching the music video.

Another technique that I had used was cutting to the beat this is useful due to the fact that I had used was making sure that the visuals cut to the beat of the track this is significant so that all of the beats match up with the visuals as this could cause discomfort for the audience as the music will not match up with the visuals which will then make people uncomfortable. Hip- hop and pop music tend to cut to the beat more as the genre of this music is aimed at a younger target and they tend to have a shorter attention spam so by beat editing this will mean that they will pay attention to the music video.

This is the first video that I had to use beat editing. The reason for beat editing is so that people are able to watch a music video without the visuals and the way that it is edited to match with the beat of the song. This music video was not a good due to the fact that in the song there is much more people involved in the music video and

This is the second music video that I beat edited.
In this music video I had used many different shots as a montage technique so that people are able to see different shots. I had used a zoom in and zoom out effect to seem as if it is the speaker worping in and out.

I feel that in the first music video that I had edited there was use of less beat editing due to the fact that I had spent less time editing this. Also due to the fact that I had not fully know how to beat edit properly and this was over the summer which then meant that I could not use the proper equipment to edit it properly. However in the recent music video I had all of the equipment that I needed so that I could beat edit using the proper software.

Another thing about the summer music video was that some parts of the music video was not lip synced to the music itself which can then cause the audience to feel uncomfortable due to the fact that people pay attention to the visuals much more than then lyrics, in my second music video I did not use as much lip syncing due to the fact that there is mainly just the beat, however when I did lip sync it to the music video it had matched up together which then made this music video much more pleasing to watch.

I feel that comparing both of them them that 'Turn down for what' is a much more better edit due to the fact that the editing was much precise and there was alot more shots that I had used and that I had also manipulated to look different such as the way that they are angled. However in the summer music video there was not enough shots for this to be a music video. In this video there visuals did not exactly match up to the music due to the fact that in the music there was a group of people and in this  music video there was only two people that were in it which will make this a less realistic music video. Also the lip syncing in the summer music video was different compared to the sound due to the fact that the actor in the music video did not know what they were singing which caused some problems as the audience will be uncomfortable and they mainly pay attention to the music video and this will make them become un- interested. Compared to the 'turn down for what' music video I had edited it so that there was only one use of lip syncing which isn't a lot however it is still effective due to the fact that people will then listen to the lyrics as well and lip syncing is a very important convention due to the fact that it re-enforces you to listen to the lyrics because no one pays attention to the lyrics the prefer the visuals .

Task 2b (ii)-(iii)- Post modern Style

2b(ii)

Performance

Performance music videos are used so that the audience know what to expect if they are going to a live concert, this is an artist’s ‘advert’ so that their target audience are able to see what it is like and so they get a preview which will then make the audience by much more tickets as music isn’t free anymore so this is record labels ways to not only just promote their artist but to generate much more money. Performance videos involve many different conventions such as lip syncing and chorography. This is an example of a performance music video due to the fact that lip syncing is involved which is a key convention that it is used. This is a key convention due to the fact people pay more attention to the videos and don’t pay attention to the lyrics so by the artists lip syncing to the track they are re enforcing the lyrics so that the audience will not only just watch the visuals they will listen to the lyrics as well.

Narrative

Narratives tend to have a beginning, middle and an end due to the fact it is supposed to tell a story. Narrative music videos start to turn into short films due to the fact that people are starting to act and also tell a story. In some videos there is a use of performance and no use of a narrative. The use of a narrative music video is so that an image is created for the artist, a fake image that their target audience can idealise, they want to show their audiences that they are much more than regular pop stars they want to show them that they can do more than just sing.

In most narrative videos the lyrics relate to the visuals. In this music video they are linking the visuals to the lyrics so that people will be able to understand the storyline of the two main characters. The repetition of the word ‘No Love’ means that there is a distance relationship between the two main characters/ artist and this is also shown on screen due to the fact they are very distance. Some parts of this video is in black and white which means that this is to represent truth between the two main characters.

Conceptual

Conceptual music videos are music videos that don’t have a narrative however it has a meaning behind it. Conceptual music videos use the base track to create visuals to create the music video.

This is a conceptual music video due to the fact that there is a hidden meaning behind it and there are many different ways that we could interpret this music video. One way that this can be seen is as the little girl is this man’s inner emotions which is then amplifying this due to the fact that he is don’t displaying his emotions a younger girl was used to demonstrate is feelings.

Task 2b(iii)

Homage

Homage is a music video that is a remake of an existing music video. Homages are also used in order to pay respect or tribute to the artist that had originally featured in the music video.

This is a use of homage due to the fact this is a tribute to Micheal Jackson this is to pay tribute to the memory of him. This music video by Chris Brown is a homage to Micheal Jacksons song smooth criminal due to the fact that they are using the same outfits.

 Parody

A parody is an replication of another music video that will exaggerate it to deliberately make a comic effect. Parodies are used to mimic an existing music video this is an example of a parody music video, “Side to Side”. In this music video this is a direct mockery of the original music video. Seen as the original music video had received over 229 million views this means by doing a pardory music video it will create much more views. Parodies are used to go viral making them receive alot more money, however we could say that parody videos are used to boost the viewings on not only their video but also on the original video.

A parody is an replication of another music video that will exaggerate it to deliberately make a comic effect. Parodies are used to mimic an existing music video this is an example of a parody music video. Pastiche Pastiche is when an artist copies another artists style or a certain time of period. This is also like homage due to the fact that artist copy the style of another artist. Allusion Allusion is when something that is happening in real life in that specific time period.

 Intertextuality

Intertextuality is a word that is used to describe the cross over of two different media such as films, music and television this can also be seen as synergy. Is music video Beating heart by Ellie Goulding there was intertextuality used as there was a cross over between a well know film (Divergent) and a music video. The reason that the music video may have been released was because this may have been used as a music video was that this may have been the quickest way to advertise the music video which would have made much more people go and watch the film. It had over 85 million views which will create a bigger fan base for not only the film but for the artist singing the film as the film is a very popular film to date. The film and the music video will generate the same target audience, young teenage girls.

 Hyper reality

Hyper reality is used in music videos to create a sense of an different reality due to the fact that this is an exgaduration on how real life really is. Animation Animation is a technique of taking pictures consecutive drawings or positions of puppets or even models to create an illusion of movement. This is can show the lyrics and it can also have a meaning behind it.

Animations

Animations create a sense of escapism due to the fact that this is not realistic, this will make them feel as if they are able to do anything. In this music video this has almost been written as a narrative, this then means that the lyric are linked to the music video.

Goodwins Music Video Analysis

In this assessment I will be looking at the styles and conventions of a music video. Andrew Goodwin was a music theorist where he had watched the music video Dancing in the Distraction Factory which had been released back in 1992 and there was six features involved in making music videos.

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics(e.g. stage performance in rock video, dance routine for boy/ girl pop band)

One of the first things that Goodwin had noticed was that there was a great use of performance when it came to to pop group genres when there is a group of boys/ girls that there will always be a performance involved. The reason that a performance is used is so that the audience know what they will be expecting at a live concert. There is also another convention that was involved in this music video which was choreography this is used for entertainment purposes because the artists are not only can the artist sing they also cross over into the dancing world this is what is expected from the record label and also the audience. Stage performances are still being used as performances however they have also been used in this narrative music video they are using lip synching.

There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting)

In this music video the lyrics and the visuals are linked together due to the fact that she repeats the words ' hollow' this is shown in the visuals as she is in a big empty house this elucidates the fact that she is empty inside. This then links back to Goodwin's theory as this amplifies the lyrics with the visuals.

There is a relationship between music and visuals

The visuals are supposed to elucidate the mood, feeling and the atmosphere of the lyrics of a song. However sometimes the visuals can match the music. Normally in a music video they link it to the lyrics so that the audience that it is aimed at is able to relate not just to the visuals but to the lyrics however people tend only to watch the visuals so when linking the music video to the music track there are a few key things that need to be included such as the pace of the editing, depending on the genre of the music video the editing will either have to be fast/ slow paced for instance in the music video by Zara Lasson it Ain't my fault they linked the music to visuals and it is very fast paced editing.

The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and it could develop motifs which could recurs across their work- the Star in Text

It is a demand for artists in major record companies that the filming crew who are going to be filming the music video to do close ups and medium close ups of the artist/ artists as they are trying to promote his/ hers/ their image so that the target audience as they are the main star so that they are promoted to everyone and a bigger target audience.

There is frequently reference to notion of looking(screens within screen, tvs, magazine  frames, windows, cameras, spy holes, peepshow?) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body- sectioning up the body into sexualised areas

The expostulation of women has intensified over the years have increased. This is an example of voyemism due to the fact that there are alot of women walking around in bikinis and lungiere which would appeal to a teenage target audience especially male teenagers are this could be classified as ' soft pornography'

There is often intertextual refrence (films, television programmes, other music videos etc.)

This involves intertextuality and performance, these are the two conventions that are used in music videos. This is a music video that is iconic as this became one of the biggest single in the history, spending 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts. There is a base track involved. This is innovative due to the fact that it was around this time that music videos had started to do crossovers with films. This can also be seen as synergy due to the fact that there is a music video about the film.

Assessment 2bi

In this report I will be talking about the styles and the conventions of music videos based on Goodwins therory of how music videos are.

Styles

A) In Concert and 'as live' footage: Imagine Dragons - Demons

This is a live performance due to the fact that they artists are playing live in front of an audience. The reason that this is performed live as this is a music video to the live performance. However this also has narrative due to the fact that the song focuses on different people within the band performing and they are all going through something different which is shown through .using close ups to look into their lives and see what has happened that they see as their 'demons'. The main purpose for music videos such as these is for music videos is so that this will sell much more tickets for concerts.

B) Interpretive

An interpretive is something that describes the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals that are shown on the screen. In the music video cheap thrills by Sia the lyrics are apart of the visuals shown on screen. This could be due to the fact that the music videos where set in the early periods of when tv had just came out and the sound quality wasn't that great so they had incorporated he text with the music video.

C) Narrative

A narrative music video is very common in music videos today. Narrative music videos are short film and this shows a story with a beginning, middle and end. The music video that is shown above has a narrative due to the fact it is based on a man loving and also whom is really obsessed with her. Narrative is related to the lyrics due to the fact the lyrics are setting the scene are are visually showing the lyrics through a music video.

D) Impressionist (Conceptual)

Conceptual music videos are music videos that does not have a narrative however it has a meaning. In some cases of conceptial videos this will not relate to the lyrics. An example of a music video that is conceptual due to the fact Sia Elastic Heart. This does not have a narrative but it has a meaning about it. This can mean many different things, the relationship between the young girl and an older man she could be amplifying the fact that she is his inner emotions.

E) Referencing (Intertextuality)

Intextuality is when two different sectors of the media converge together. For instance in the music video shown above I will always love you by Whitney Huston. I will always love you was connected to the film 'The bodyguard' which some parts of the film were featured in the music video. This is innovative due to the fact around this era they started to cross film over with music videos.

Pop Genre

Conventions are key in music videos, not all of the genres use conventions in their music videos, some artists to not want to be categorized as being pop stars, not feeling like true 'artists'. Hip- pop, Pop, Indie and Self portrayed music videos all follow conventions, however Indie artist like to break this convention due to the fact the see themselves more as artist than pop stars. In this genres there are many different styles that are used so that the audience for each genre does not get bored these styles are things such as: narrative, conceptual and performance. A narrative is a very common style that is used due to the fact it has a beginning, middle and an end which is normally used to tell a story. A performance music video is an advert to a live performance such as a concert, conceptual is a music video that does not have a narrative but it has meaning.

A key theme that reoccurring  in pop music videos is the use of vibrant colours to appeal to a certain type of target audience. Pop music is generally aimed at a younger target audience due to the fact that the colours are very playful.
In this music video side to side by Ariana Grande this is a performance due to the fact that the artist is performing to the camera, there is also choreography used. The reason that this is a performance due to the fact that this is a music video for what will happen on a live performance. This is also a performance due to the fact that the artist is lip-syncing to the track. There are many close ups used due to the fact that the record label demands the artist to be promoted and by using close ups it promotes the artist. There is also a use of voyeurism due to the fact the camera is focusing on women's legs and the bums, this is to fulfill the needs of the target audience as the male audience enjoying watching women's riding on bicycles wearing short clothes, this will also make the male audience want to watch the music videos due to the fact that this is ' soft pornography' and for a female audience they idolize what the women are doing and then want to go and do the same thing. This video is to amplify the lyrics due to the fact she is singing 'side to side' and this is shown when she is riding on a bike rocking side to side. The editing is fast paced due to the target audience as they have a short attention spam and they might not want to watch the music video if it is really slow so therefor they cut it to the beat which then makes it rhythmic editing.

Another video that I am going to talk about is Ain't my fault by Zara Larsson. There is Voyeurism near the beginning of this music video she is touching up herself. This is also similar to Ariana Grandes video side to side they both use performances as she is lip-syncing to the track. There is also choreography involved due to the fact that people are interested in people dancing due to the age of the target audience they will be able to dance to the song aswell.  There is a great use of bright colours due to the fact that this is a pop music video and this is how it relates to a younger target audience.

In this pop music video Starving by Haliee Stienfeld and Zedd this is also a performance due to the fact that there is a choreography. There is a use of voyeurism however this is men that are being sexulised as they are oiled up and topless which is different from the other two videos as there are women being sexulised. She is wearing short clothes in the video this is expected for a pop star due to the fact that she needs to create an image for herself as a brand so that people will be intregued in it more. There are close ups of the artist to advertise her so that when people see her in the video they will be able to see that she is the artist. The lighting in the music videos for the music video is quite dark which is not expected in a pop music video due to the age of the target audience however this can display a longing for something due to th fact that she is singing about missing the taste of someone.

Last video that I will be analyzing is Clean Bandit Tears ft Lousia Johnson. The is also a performance because there is a band playing. There is a great use of vibrant colours. This is use of lip synching.  There is also a cherography used. The music is linked to the visuals due to the fact that they are cutting the music to the visuals this is then called rhythmitic editing. The reason for using rthmitic editing is because the target audience prefer the visuals to be fast pacesd compared to someone who is much more older who would probably perfer a slower paced music video.

In conclusion in pop videos there is a great use of lip syncing in pop music videos as they do not consider themselves as artists they consider themselves as Stars. Also in all of this videos that I have evaluated today they all contain lip synching involved.
