Goodwins Music Video Analysis

In this assessment I will be looking at the styles and conventions of a music video. Andrew Goodwin was a music theorist where he had watched the music video Dancing in the Distraction Factory which had been released back in 1992 and there was six features involved in making music videos.

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics(e.g. stage performance in rock video, dance routine for boy/ girl pop band)

One of the first things that Goodwin had noticed was that there was a great use of performance when it came to to pop group genres when there is a group of boys/ girls that there will always be a performance involved. The reason that a performance is used is so that the audience know what they will be expecting at a live concert. There is also another convention that was involved in this music video which was choreography this is used for entertainment purposes because the artists are not only can the artist sing they also cross over into the dancing world this is what is expected from the record label and also the audience. Stage performances are still being used as performances however they have also been used in this narrative music video they are using lip synching.

There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting)

In this music video the lyrics and the visuals are linked together due to the fact that she repeats the words ' hollow' this is shown in the visuals as she is in a big empty house this elucidates the fact that she is empty inside. This then links back to Goodwin's theory as this amplifies the lyrics with the visuals.

There is a relationship between music and visuals

The visuals are supposed to elucidate the mood, feeling and the atmosphere of the lyrics of a song. However sometimes the visuals can match the music. Normally in a music video they link it to the lyrics so that the audience that it is aimed at is able to relate not just to the visuals but to the lyrics however people tend only to watch the visuals so when linking the music video to the music track there are a few key things that need to be included such as the pace of the editing, depending on the genre of the music video the editing will either have to be fast/ slow paced for instance in the music video by Zara Lasson it Ain't my fault they linked the music to visuals and it is very fast paced editing.

The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and it could develop motifs which could recurs across their work- the Star in Text

It is a demand for artists in major record companies that the filming crew who are going to be filming the music video to do close ups and medium close ups of the artist/ artists as they are trying to promote his/ hers/ their image so that the target audience as they are the main star so that they are promoted to everyone and a bigger target audience.

There is frequently reference to notion of looking(screens within screen, tvs, magazine  frames, windows, cameras, spy holes, peepshow?) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body- sectioning up the body into sexualised areas

The expostulation of women has intensified over the years have increased. This is an example of voyemism due to the fact that there are alot of women walking around in bikinis and lungiere which would appeal to a teenage target audience especially male teenagers are this could be classified as ' soft pornography'

There is often intertextual refrence (films, television programmes, other music videos etc.)

This involves intertextuality and performance, these are the two conventions that are used in music videos. This is a music video that is iconic as this became one of the biggest single in the history, spending 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts. There is a base track involved. This is innovative due to the fact that it was around this time that music videos had started to do crossovers with films. This can also be seen as synergy due to the fact that there is a music video about the film.
