Single Camera Production vs Multi Camera Production
Single camera productions use only one camera when shooting low budget films. Single camera productions are used to make it more realistic. Single camera productions are more suitable for series and serials to give the production a real life feel to it, it makes the audience feel as if they were a part of the program.
Multi camera productions use several different cameras when shooting. This allows films to shot from many different angles at the same time. Multi camera productions are much more suitable for filming live shows or studio filming so that they are able to cut to different people’s reactions.
Different Genres
Different types of genres such as talk shows, thrillers and comedy use different camera productions, single or multi.
One multi camera production is the talk show Jeremy Kyle. This is a multi camera production as it is live they need to catch all aspects such as the talent which s Jeremy Kyle, the people that are being interviewed and the audience. If they only have one camera to film this, it would be as effective as it would basically be acted out as they will have to keep setting up the shoot so that they can get the reaction from the audience and from the people that are getting interviewed by Jeremy. During the will filming process they will be a lot of switching to different shots so us as the viewers at home we will get to see their response to what people are saying which then we also get a reaction as if we are there. The camera cuts to different angles so that we don’t miss anything.
Another multi camera production is live at Glastonbury. This uses multi camera as this is show live from millions of people to see not only from the crowd but for viewers at home so it makes them feel as if they were there in the concert with the others. The multi camera is good for live shows so they can cut quickly to when the act is moving around the stage and also to cut to the crowd. The also show shots were we are able to see a bigger picture of where they are if they used a single camera the will not be able to change to different shots for the viewers to see.
For genres such as science fiction and teen dramas they both use single camera productions. For a science fiction such as Doctor who they use single camera production for a much more dramatic effect and also by the use of close ups we are able to see facial expressions. It would be much more preferable to film this type of series with a multi camera production as the characters move a lot throughout the program, but the use of single camera is used as it will be cheaper and there will be less crew involved so then there is more time to plan for the locations and how it will be filmed. There are many benefits for using a single camera when filming a series such as Doctor who you have more time to focus on the shots, especially when using the 180 degree rule you will not see other camera men in the shoot as you are only using one camera. On the other hand you may break the 180 degree rule by crossing the imaginary line called the line of action. You will be able to redo the shot until you have gotten it right but you would have wasted a lot of time which then means that you have a lot of footage to edit through. With single camera productions you and use a great amount of camera techniques such as wide shots, extreme close ups and long shots to make the program much more dramatic effect so we are able to see the characters different emotions so that the audience are able to feel as if they were in that situation.
For a teen drama such as skins a single camera production is needed to make it look more realistic for the viewers. This is a show that people can relate to as it may happen in real life. This teen drama is fast paced so that the audience feels engage, the characters can relate to the audience with the amount of close ups that are used they feel as if they were a part of the program.
The same applies for comedies and thriller. With comedies they show us different angles and different shots types so we get a feel for what the character is doing for instance in Come fly with me they focus on the character then the cash machine to show how slow he is with the most simple things this makes it more funnier for the audience because he is seen as an idiot which makes much more comical.
With thrillers they use single camera production to elucidate the relationship between the characters. They will use a two shot to complete this action as in Utopia we see the relationship between a mother and a son the closeness of them shows as that they are familiar with each other, however we see that relationship with the mother and then man how they are distance implying that they are strangers to each other. It is not ideal to use a multi camera for thrillers as thrillers are supposed to scare you not as much as a horror but they are supposed to give you a fright this cannot be done with multi camera as it will not be as realistic as a single camera production.
In our webisode we used a single camera to film we used different single camera techniques.
Purpose
The purpose for using multi camera production is normally to record live show. Sometimes there can be unexpected movement for instance in the Jeremy Kyle show there is a lot of movement from both the interviewer and the interviewee or if they are recording car racing you one camera man will not be able to capture all of the footage by running after the cars, so with a multi camera they are able to catch different angles. The purpose for using single camera productions is to be more effective for the viewers, this is also very cheap as you do not have to pay for the more than one camera and as there is less crew it will be cheaper.
Advantages of Single Camera Production
>It is low budget so instead of paying a great amount of money on multi camera it is much cheaper if you use a single camera.
> There is a variety of footage that you are able to use.
>You are able to do that to several times to make sure that you have the right scene for the production.
>You will have much more time with a single camera production so therefore you will have more time to scout for locations.
>Will not catch other people such as camera men in the shot as you are only using one camera.
>It also allows you to be more creative with the filming for instance if you use a variety of shots such as close ups, wide shots, extreme close ups, long shot. You can also plan the angles and the amount of set ups that you will for each shot.
Disadvantages of Single Camera Production
>More footage has to be sorted through or there may not be enough footage to sort through.
>It will be harder to film. For example when it is sun set you can film that shot and then film another shot when it is pitch black as the audience will be confused about what has happened.
>The Camera may run out of battery or the film may run out.
>You may cross the line of action which is very bad as it will look weird when watching it.
Advantage of Multi Camera Production
>You will be able to capture different footage of different cameras if the battery runs out of one.
>The 180 degree rule does don’t apply for multi camera productions.
>You are able to cut between shots with multi camera productions.
>There is less set ups required as you are using more than one camera.
Disadvantage of Multi Camera Production
>You can get seen on the camera as the other camera men may get in the way.
>You are not able to redo the shots.
>Multi camera productions are much more expensive then single camera productions at there are more crew.
